Blades Starter Guide

The Elder Scrolls Blades is a town building story based dungeon-crawling first-person RPG designed for mobile devices, so it doesn't hit any of those genres directly on the head but for a mobile game, it's pretty damn good.

You as the player character is a member of the Blades who has now been exiled thanks to the White Gold Concordat. The player returns to their home town to find it destroyed and must rebuild it.

We will go on quests through dungeons, castles, outdoor areas, ancient ruins, caves, all of that like and we must finish rebuilding our hometown all the while experiencing a full quest line.

So now we know what we're dealing with ket's get into Blades. First thing is first, get a feel for the combat and the movement.

It's weird at first but after a few minutes you'll get it down pretty naturally. It takes a minute or two to get used to the movement and the combat is a bit clunky as well.

It's similar to normal Elder Scrolls games in terms of style but the mechanics are where the change is. You hold down until the red circle turns gold then you let it go and that attacks.

If the circle is not gold you will not attack. You make sure to use your shield to block attacks if you need to but you don't really have to if it isn't your style.

Now, as soon as you level up you can either unlock an ability, perk, or spell. I would 100% suggest unlocking and equipping the Firebolt spell.

You can usually take out enemies with it quickly but of course, do whatever you want for your play style. It's just a good thing to have for the start.

Looting in Blades is very intuitive. It's important to remember that if it's glowing then it's interesting and that's how you know what to look for.

If it's not glowing then don't pay any mind to them. Most of the time when you kill an enemy they'll drop something so pick it up although most of your loot will come from chests which are obvious.

When you open a chest it doesn't actually open but goes into your inventory by default. It has ten slots and the standard inventory has a default of twenty slots but lucky only equipment takes up inventory slots

It's all about armor, weapons, shields, and jewels. You can increase your inventory space with a perk or with gems.

Experience is important but how do you get it? You kill things, you get XP. You do quests, you get XP. You do stuff, and you get XP.

When you level up you will by default gain Health then have the choice to gain Stamina or Magicka as well. You get one skill point which you can spend on the Spell tree, Ability tree, or Perk tree.

The currencies of the game starting with Gold. Much like XP, you get gold by looting stuff, killing stuff, doing quests, etc.

We use gold for just about everything from buying items to building structures. It's all the stuff you'd expect gold to be used for.

The other currency is Gems and these are the meta-currency you can buy with real-world money. You can get gems in the game by killing enemies who will very rarely drop 1 gem.

Some chests can give gems and some harder quests can give you gems as well. They are also used to fast track events like opening chests instantly and finishing buildings instantly.

You can also use them to buy things from the in-game store as well. The gem pricing is a bit steep though because the prices of somethings compared to what you can get by playing freely is big.

It is a free game with no ads so they have to make their money somewhere. Now the main thing you'll be using your gems for is opening chests.

The better the chest the longer it takes to open. So it's either locked behind a time wall or a gem wall and you run out of gems quickly and get them slowly.

You can buy inventory slots with gems which is a good idea because it makes dealing with chests easier. And overall is a better investment in my opinion.

The next most important thing is getting your town set up. After you play for an hour or so you'll have rescued the Smith and it's important to build the Smithy.

You'll now have a vendor in your town where you can sell unwanted things as well as mend your armor and weapons. Even if you're not super into the town mechanic it is smart to have at least one vendor for this.

The more buildings in your town the more prestige your town games. Prestige is basically the experience of your town, the more you get the more it levels up.

The more it levels up the more things you can build and the more you build the more people will come to your town. Materials for building can be gotten like any other loot in the game.

The four main buildings will be the Smithy, the Alchemy Laboratory where you can make potions, the Enchanters tower, and the Workshop where you can create decors.

So now onto Questing. Most of the time quests will come from NPC's in the town and all NPC's have a diamond above their head and if it has an "!" in it then they have a quest available.

Once you have a quest all you do is click the quest symbol and then select the quest and hit start. It will then take you to wherever the quest is.

There are also things called challenges which are little objectives like kill 10 Goblins or two 3 quests and they can usually reward you with gold. These are good to do alongside quests.

Very early on you will unlock Jobs as well which are also accessed through the quest tab. Jobs don't have any real story attached to them but they do give rewards for doing them.

The quests are where the story is though. It's where the bigger rewards are and the harder dungeons are going to be.

Once you're in dungeons it's pretty straight forward. After a while, you'll see the dungeons start to get a bit repetitive which can be dangerous for boredom but it does give you an idea of where everything is and how to move through them quickly.

Which is handy when doing a bunch of jobs back to back because coming away with the loot is the fun bit. But again, overall it's very straight forward.

There is a blue glowing light which tells you where to go for whatever objective you are on. Something that can be easily missed is that dungeons have secrets.

These are areas that are accessed by things in the dungeon. Candle on the wall, a chain, a key, a secret urn, etc. Secrets always hold valuable stuff so look out for them.

Luckily when you finish a quest it will tell you how many secrets were in the level and how many you found. But on jobs, you don't typically end up finding secrets as much as you do on quests.

Also, when you finish a quest I advise clicking the continue exploring button even if you're sure you got everything. It doesn't hurt to do a second look just to be sure.

Now just some general tips about the game. Save your gems for opening chest or buying more inventory spaces because anything else seems like a waste and inflated.

Make sure to give your spells and ability a good thing and try to use ones that compliment each other especially on tougher enemies. It's important to remember that timing is everything so be sure to use them at the right time.

The combat in the game can fall into a pattern that you just have to learn in order to get down. It changes depending on if you prioritize your sword over your magic.

Spells have a casting time which can make them difficult to use so learning the timing is really important for using spells. Getting good at shield bashing and stunning is a great strategy to use your spells safely.

As for chests, I'd suggest always making sure you have a chest opening before you close Blades and if you can make sure you have a building being built to that way so when you wake up the next morning and come back to Blades the chest will be ready to open or the building will be built.
